The demand for a separate federating unit for South Punjab, commonly referred to as “Saraikistan,” has been a significant politico-constitutional issue since 2010. While some argue that Saraiki is a dialect of Punjabi, its proponents emphasize a distinct identity, language, culture, and geo-social categories. Adding to this is the persistent politico-economic injustice, inequality, and marginalization faced by the region, fueling calls for a separate province. Amjad Nazeer will advocate for the creation of a Saraiki Province, demonstrating how it could strengthen Pakistan’s federal system, reduce inter- and intra-provincial conflicts, and rebalance the representation in the National and Provincial Assemblies and Senate, as well as the NFC award distribution. He will argue that this measure could pave the way for greater equity, democratic stability, economic fairness, and national progress.
