The finance industry, from pawn shops to multinational banks, has never enjoyed a good reputation. It has been blamed for the recurring financial crisis, for deepening poverty, for being a handmaiden of the exploitative capitalist class, and for many other sins. On the other hand, it is pointed out that finance has contributed enormously to the society through its institutions and products such as banking, insurance, mortgages, savings accounts, and pensions. In this talk, Dr. Jamshed Uppal, Distinguished Professor of Research at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC, presents the related issues in simple terms. He addresses the question of how society can harness the power of finance for the greater good of all.
