The Black Hole TOGGLE NAVIGATION The Philosophy of Space & Time: From Aristotle to Einstein and Beyond Published by on October 27, 2023 The Philosophy of Space & Time: From Aristotle to Einstein and Beyond 124 In this talk, the speaker will take the audience on a journey through the development of the concepts of space and time, with key figures being Aristotle, Galileo, Newton and Einstein. The focus will be on the Physics, rather than a detailing of historical events. We will see how Aristotle viewed space and time and how this conception was superseded by Galileo and Newton. We will discuss Newton’s concept of Absolute Space and Time and Leibniz’s critique of these concepts. Next, we will discuss Einstein’s radical modification of Newtonian space and time, into a single unity we now call “spacetime”. What was flat and static for Newton became curved and dynamic for Einstein. At the very end, we will briefly discuss how the latest theories of quantum gravity may supersede the concept of spacetime altogether, leading to an even more fundamental description of reality at the smallest scales. The speaker will keep the talk as simple and as understandable as he can. Anyone with a basic high school-level understanding of Physics can easily follow along. About the Speaker: Shahryar Khan is a graduate of physics from Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad and PhD Physics candidate at University of Houston, USA. His research interests range from cosmology to condensed matter physics to chaos theory. He is also deeply interested in pure mathematics, philosophy and artificial intelligence.
