ABSTRACT: This panel will discuss ethical and cultural considerations when providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to Latino families in Mexico and the United States. The United States is a diversifying at a fast rate. According to the 2021 Census data,18.9% of the United States population are Hispanic, and Mexican account for over 60% of the Hispanic subgroup. Mexico is the third-largest country in Latin America and has the second-largest economy. In Mexico, a lack of medical and educational services is common, especially for families of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Panelists will share about the creation of a professional organization to disseminate the science of behavior analysis across Mexico and about the first behavior analytic organization in the United States formed to specifically address diversity of behavior analysts in the field of ABA. Results from a study that examined early intervention needs in the Mexican population and compared these needs to those in the Latinx Spanish-speaking population in the United States will also be discussed. Panelists will discuss their experiences, challenges, and lessons learned when providing ABA services to Latino families. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences during this interactive panel session. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to: 1. Participants will compare the early education needs of Latinx Spanish-speaking children and children living in Mexico. ABOUT Berenice de la Cruz, PhD, BCBA-D, LBA Berenice de la Cruz, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families through culturally humble ABA treatment and advocacy efforts in partnership with families and community agencies. Dr. de la Cruz has been a BCBA since 2006 and has worked with children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities since 2001 in school, home, clinic, and community settings as a teacher, therapists, supervisor, director, and professor. She received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in Special Education, specializing in Autism and Developmental Disabilities and her Master’s in Clinical Psychology from The University of Texas at El Paso. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor and inaugural Program Coordinator for the Applied Behavior Analysis Program at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Dr. de la Cruz has served as the Treasurer of TxABA PPG since 2019 and was an advisory board member since 2016. She also serves as a Council Member for the Texas Association for Behavior Analysis and a a Board Member for the Autism Society of Texas. Her research and practice focus primarily on evaluating the application of ABA when used by parents, teachers, and other professionals to support individuals with developmental disabilities in the home, school, and community. Dr. de la Cruz has published several peer-reviewed research articles and co-authored several book chapters in fields of developmental disabilities, addictive behaviors, and social cognition. She regularly presents in English and Spanish at local, state, and national/international conferences. Dr. de la Cruz resides in San Antonio, Texas with her husband and their two children. ABOUT Varsovia Hernández Eslava, PhD, BCBA-D Varsovia Hernández Eslava received her Ph.D. in Experimental Analysis of Behavior from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Then, she was a post-doctoral fellow at the Behavior Analysis Research Clinic at University of Florida. She currently is a Full Time Researcher of the Biomedical Research Center at Universidad Veracruzana, México. Her areas of research are Applied Behavior Analysis (with emphases in the areas of pediatric feeding problems and parent training) and Experimental Analysis of Behavior. Varsovia has authored several articles and book chapters in Spanish and English related to Behavior Analysis. She also co-developed the data collection software CounteeApp. Varsovia is the Mexican ambassador of the World Behavior Analysis day and the president of the Mexican Organization of Practitioners of Applied Behavior Analysis. In 2021 she received the SABA’s Public Awareness Grant. ABOUT Ruth Tello-Di Leva, MS, BCBA Ruth Tello-Di Leva, MS, BCBA is the Familias First founder and President. Ruth received her Master's degree in Counseling, with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) from the California State University, Los Angeles. She is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Additionally, she earned certificates in the areas of Domestic Violence, and Child Neglect and Maltreatment. Before founding Familias First, Ruth provided ABA services to individuals diagnosed with autism, across the lifespan, as a direct service provider, a supervisor and subsequently, and a Behavior Program Director. These years ignited the passion that lead Ruth to found her own company. Ruth is also a co-founder of the Latino Association for Behavior Analysis (LABA), an organization dedicated to defining the best practices in the provision of ABA services to the Latino population. Ruth also co-authored the Autism Parent Education Program (APEP), a curriculum that is currently used by select Southern California Regional Centers to educate families about services available to individuals diagnosed with autism. Ruth has been a presenter at the Association for Behavior Analysis International, California Association for Behavior Analysis, and Fiesta Educativa, among other reputable organizations. ABOUT Janet Enriquez, MS, BCBA Janet Sanchez Enriquez is a Bilingual Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Special Education Ph.D. student at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has a Master's degree in Special Education with a specialization in Autism Interventions and Applied Behavior Analysis. Janet has over 15 years of experience working and supporting families and professionals in a variety of settings in the school districts and within various community organizations across the US and Latin America. Janet is interested in the design and dissemination of empirically based practices and Applied Behavior Analysis to increase the independence, health, and quality of life of the individuals and families she serves. ABOUT LABA: LABA is an organization dedicated to improving cultural, social and ethnic diversity in the field of applied behavior analysis as well as addressing the particular needs of diverse individuals and diverse communities. LABA was formed by three Latino behavior analysts, Ruth Tello-Di Leva, Isaac Bermudez and Jose D Rios, who, combined have worked in the field of behavior analysis for nearly 90 years. LABA was the first behavior analytic organization formed specifically to address diversity (and the absence of diversity) in our field. LABA focuses on disseminating evidenced-based practices and providing support, resources, training opportunities, communication and networking opportunities to practitioners and students with the purpose of increasing the visibility, participation and collaboration of Latinos and other underrepresented groups in the leadership of behavior analytic organizations, educational institutions and behavior analytic agencies.
